2012 points out the year of change in continuity : after a first term (2008-2011) charged by Alain Menand, the contract of the research IRMA federation (FR3095) has been extended by the national council with a new team direction. The establishment of the current federation is made gradually with the joining of the CIMAP at mid-term (January 1, 2010) and as background the development of the national platform of electron microscopy and atomic probe METSA since 1 January 2009, in which the IRMA is one of the 7 poles. Today with a potential of 350 persons whose a fifties directly related to the analytical techniques at the atomic scale of materials, this federation plays a major role in the development of the future materials. Alain Menand having made its rights to retirement, a new executive board around the three directors of laboratories (CRISMAT, GPM and CIMAP) forming the backbone of this federation was established with the primary objective of pooling the expertise and equipment. A scientific council has been formed with the external personalities in order to urge and promote internal and external collaborations. To strengthen this partnership and these exchanges, an annual workshop is scheduled alternately on the sites of Caen and Rouen. Hope to be numerous during these meetings and active in your collaborations, I wish you all the best in your future research activities.

Denis Pelloquin, directeur de l’IRMA
